Instagram Goes Landscape

Instagram recently announced that you can now post images and videos to the platform in landscape, woo hoo! Let’s all rush out right now and take group selfies and full images of bridges.

Seriously though, this is pretty exciting for Instagram users. Although square has always been Instagram’s thing, and there is some argument that Instagram is losing its identity, we can’t help but be quite excited by this.

So, how has Instagram actually changed? First of all you’re going to need to update Instagram on your phone. Once you’ve done that you will now have a few more options when you sign in to post your image. Select or take your image as normal and you’ll see the format button in the left hand corner that looks like two arrows. Clicking this lets you change the format between square, landscape or portrait depending on the original photo. The official word from Instagram is “Anything with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5 will be supported from landscape to portrait”

When your uploaded image appears in someone’s feed it appears to them in the format that you have chosen, but to keep the tidy grid of your profile the images will be cropped into squares. Well done Instagram!

One really exciting thing about this update will be the ability to upload landscape videos. If you’re serious about capturing good videos with your phone you will always film landscape! Plus, Instagram has now given you more options when it comes to editing videos. They say “While we’ve historically had separate filters for photos and for videos, all filters will now work on all types of moments”.

All in all we think this is a very exciting update and we’re looking forward to seeing how people use it. What do you think of the update? Has Instagram lost its identity, or is this a good thing for the platform? Comment below or come and find us on Facebook or Twitter.
